United Service Organizations, Inc. (USO) is a not-for-profit, congressionally chartered, private organization devoted exclusively to strengthening America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.
The USO relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities. For over 78 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they join, through their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back to their communities, the USO is always by their side.
The USO has relied on a robust direct response program not only to generate contributions but also to enlist the publics’ aid in identifying service members and their families that would benefit from USO’s programs and services and an opportunity to send a personalized message of appreciation to service members as a component of the USO’s Force Behind the Forces℠ Campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to address the civilian-military drift – a natural disconnect and lack of understanding between those who have served in the military and those whom they defend who may have never served and may not know or be related to anyone who has. Since 2016, through our website and mail, the USO collected over 5 million messages of appreciation from the American public and are distributing or displaying these at USO locations across the globe. Therefore, in accordance with the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) guidelines, the USO allocates a portion of our direct-response costs to program services and to fund-raising.
