Send Cheer

The USO and Cheerios have partnered up this fall to send a little Cheer to military families! To kick off the campaign, a special paint scheme was unveiled that will adorn the No. 33 Chevrolet driven by Clint Bowyer at the Phoenix International Raceway during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event the weekend of November 11-13. The design features the message “send Cheer” to encourage fans to send thanks and spread cheer to military families whose loved ones are serving our country.

Military families, whether on bases or in their communities, often face separation, relocations, single parenting duties and economic stress. There are more than 1.4 million active duty military members supported by more than 3.6 million family members, and 70% of married active duty military members have children.

“Our military families rise to the occasion when their loved ones are away and do it willingly, graciously and without fanfare,” said Erin Pisca, Integrated Communications for Cheerios. “We’re proud to partner with the USO, Richard Childress Racing and Clint Bowyer to get the word out and send cheer to these families. We can’t thank them enough for all their support of this program.”
To get involved, first look for “Cheer” postcards on the front of specially marked packages of Cheerios cereal found in stores October through November, 2011. People can simply cut out the postcard from the box, write a message of thanks on the back, add a stamp, and mail the pre-addressed postcard to the USO. The USO will deliver the postcards to military families. In addition, Cheerios will send extra “Cheer” to military families by donating $1 to the USO for each postcard received from specially marked packages through November 30, 2012. To kick off the campaign, Cheerios has already donated $150,000 to the USO, and will donate up to an additional $100,000 based upon the number of postcards received. The donation will go towards USO programs that help connect families with their loved ones while deployed.

The U.S. Navy is a Libra

Today, the U.S. Navy turns 236 years old, and for some odd reason the first thought in my head when I walked in to the office was, “America’s Navy is a Libra?”

It’s no surprise to me that the Navy is a Libra. Diplomatic, graceful, peaceful and hospitable are pretty good words to describe America’s Navy: A Global Force for Good.

At this point I was emotionally invested. I had to look up the birthday of every branch of service to see if their astrological sign accurately described them. As a member of the Marine Corp for more than a decade, I wasn’t surprised to find their sign to be Scorpio - how what better way to decribe a Marine than the words loyal,  resourceful, dynamic and passionate?

The Coast Guard was another fire sign – Leo.  Their traits were spot-on: independent, working our borders alone under the Department of Homeland Security; loyal—standing guard, always at the ready; ambitious—always looking for new roles and new ways to improve our national security; and generous—lending your services overseas on numerous occasions when America has needed her best.

The Army, being a Gemini, is described as energetic, clever and adaptable. They are definitely the social butterfly of all the services. They are everywhere—always coming up with a new catch-phrase to show us how imaginative they are: Be All You Can Be, Army of One, and Army Strong.

The Air Force is a Virgo. Highly analytical, observant and precise, Virgo are known to be intelligent to the point of scientific. Perhaps a good sign for the branch that has the rocket scientists, eh?

Happy birthday Navy—you are indeed Libra: diplomat and friend! – Joseph A. Lee, USO Staff Writer

Burgers at Berth 9

On September 23, USO YokosukaHard Rock Cafe Japan joined together for tasty burgers, entertainment and door prizes in appreciation to the many troops that provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts after the devastating events of March 11, 2011.

Service members enjoy some tasty food

USO Japan hosted over 2,000 active duty service members at Berth #9 alongside the USS BludeRidge and handed out almost 4,000 freshly grilled, signature Hard Rock Cafe Burgers. Sounds like more than a few people went back for seconds and thirds!

Elvis has been spotted in Japan!

“Elvis” was there to rock out and provide the entertainment during the free lunch. Not only was the event a great success (as measured by smiles and full stomachs!), but Hard Rock Cafe donated everything, making the event the largest in-kind donation USO Japan has ever received! USO | P&G Beauty and Grooming Lounge

P&G provided all the hair and beauty products used for the makeovers

When you find out the military man in your life is being honored by the USO at their annual gala, you’re certainly thrilled and proud. But hobnobbing with Washingtonian politicos and top military officials in a glittering ballroom can be a daunting idea for the average woman! Guest Lori Johnson said, “I’ve been to a couple military formals, but nothing on this scale. It’s a little overwhelming… but exciting!” Luckily the USO and P&G were there to help make things as fun and relaxing as possible!

The day of the event, the spouses, mothers, and the honorees themselves were invited to the P&G Beauty and Grooming Lounge for some well-deserved pampering! There were five fully stocked stations for hair, make-up and shaving to take advantage of to help the families feel as confident as possible for their big night. “I’m ready for my transformation!” exclaimed military mom Marilyn Torrens.
