Elton John Concert Helps U.S. Troops, Military Families Feel the Love

Can you feel the love tonight? For 500 American troops and military family members who got free tickets an Elton John concert in the historic German city of Freiburg im Breisgau, the answer is a resounding yes.

Thanks to the generosity of eps infrastructure and service GmbH, which have donated thousands of marquee concert tickets to U.S. forces since 2007, military families had the privilege of watching one of the world’s greatest entertainers belt out mega-hits like “Tiny Dancer,” “Your Song,” “Rocketman,” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

U.S. forces lucky enough to land tickets, which were distributed by USO Europe at USO centers throughout Germany, got the chance to forget about the stress of life during wartime for a few hours on July 1. By all accounts, the service members and military families in attendance had a wonderful time at the event.

With a stunning southwest German sunset as a backdrop, Elton John played another one of his biggest hits, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me.” A YouTube clip shows the capacity crowd giving the singer a standing ovation at the performance’s conclusion.

When the sun did finally set on Freiburg im Breisgau on the night of July 1, one fact was bright and clear. The USO, along with generous donors like eps infrastructure and service GmbH, will never let the sun go down on our troops and their families. - Tom Sileo, USO Director of Story Development

Kangaroo Express’s USO Jeep Tour

Drew & Tim are spending 100 days this summer driving throughout the south east with their Army Jeep from the '50s!

The south east convenience store chain Kangaroo Express is in the middle of a fantastic “Salute Our Troops” campaign, having already raised $1 million in just a few weeks! The summer-long campaign invites donations at more than 1,600 Kangaroo Express stores or online at KESalute.com, and the funds raised will benefit the USO, Wounded Warrior Project, and state-based military support organizations that benefit troops and their families. You can also post photos or videos on the site praising the military heroes in your lives and communities on the site!

The USO Jeep crew have been recording shout outs to the troops at various Kangaroo Expresses across the south east!

Feeding the frenzy of appreciation is the USO Salute Our Troops Jeep Tour, which deployed on Memorial Day and will complete its mission on Labor Day. A fully-restored 1952 Willys CJ-3 Jeep is touring the Southeast to honor military heroes and families along the route at Kangaroo Express locations and community events. The Salute Our Troops Jeep Tour made its first stops in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida through June. Driven by Tim and Drew, they been collecting video shout-outs to upload and getting people excited!

During their stop in Pensacola, FL, the USO Jeep crew hit up the beach for a Blue Angels show and various Kangaroo Express stores in the area. Hundreds of people, children, veterans, and friends of the military recorded their own shout-outs in just two days! You can track the next leg of the Jeep Tour on Kangaroo Express’ Facebook and Twitter accounts. Next stop Tuscaloosa, AL! – Vyque White, USO

Ride 2 Recovery Normandy Challenge

The riders and Mayor of St. Mere Eglise pose with a 48 star American flag that flew over the US Cemetery in Belfast from 1944-1948.

Today wraps up the ride of a lifetime for any military supporter who loves history! A group of 30 wounded warriors and their supporters visited places like Utah and Omaha beaches, Pointe du Hoc, Brecourt Manor, and Caen for the recent Ride 2 Recovery Normandy Challange. Several of the riders were French WWII vets, including one who fought with the USA on Utah Beach!

After riding for five days thru the D-Day battlefields, the ride joined Stage 6 of the Tour de France in the finish town of Liseux. Perhaps they caught a glimpse of HTC sprinter Mark Cavendish crossing the finish line!

Read more about R2R and find the ride guide on the Ride 2 Recovery website, or follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
