USO – There For The Troops (A Poem)

USO legend Bob Hope performs for Troops in Sicily on a 1943 USO Tour. (Photo reprinted by the USO with permission from the Bob Hope Collection.)

One hundred seven years ago today, Leslie Townes Hope was born in England.  You might know him better as Bob.  Yes, it’s Bob Hope’s birthday and we’re celebrating by bringing you this special poem, which salutes all of those who have supported the USO and our Troops…

Throughout its noble history
the USO has been there
for America’s brave, honorable ones
who answered our beloved country’s call
on behalf of us all,
standing proudly tall
defending the home of the brave,
and keeping the USA
the land of the free
with oh so many in harm’s way.

The USO has gone and continues to go
with patriotic volunteer entertainers
from legends to new star faces
bringing enjoyable reprieve
to our troops near and far away,
with a message of appreciation, respect, and support
for their valiant duty to country!

The USO truly exemplifies
love and pride of America,
as does all the involved celebrity patriots
with a special salute to those being there
whenever asked like… Bob Hope, Wayne Newton,
Martha Raye, Ann-Margret, Gary Sinise, and Toby Keith.

Thanks for the memories
that you brought to every American troop!

  1. Bob Hope lived to be 100 and in those years, he accomplished so much. He not only entertained our troops through the different Theatres (war-time), but has contributed in so many other ways to the community (Hospital wings in CA in his name and that of his wife, Dolores Hope and so much more. His wit and
    charm will live on

  2. Thanks USO for sharing my poem, “USO – There For The Troops”, on Bob Hope’s 107th birthday.

And while I wrote the poem in tribute to this great organization and its volunteers, especially the celebrity patriots, for being there for our brave, honorable troops including when in harm’s way . . . the first verse of the last stanza is also for Bob Hope, who I wrote a poem paying tribute to him at http://www.usa-patriotism.com/poems/hp/thanks_for_memories1.htm.

The USO will always have USA Patriotism! and my support.

    Sincerely,
