Anniversary Photos – USO Rome Tours, a Lasting Tradition

In one of the first color photos in our Archives, a USO Volunteer is seen loading up a bus for a USO Tour in Rome, a tradition that continues to this very day!  The USO supports our Troops and their families wherever they are, whether with programs and services, celebrity entertainment, or  – tours of some of the world’s most famous historical sites.  If you’re visiting Rome soon and will be visiting the USO, be sure to check out our current tour offerings.

You might not have known it, but watching the Grammys on Sunday was like seeing an All-Star USO show.  Congratulations to USO tour veterans Zac Brown Band, Carrie Underwood, Randy Travis, Third Day and Stephen Colbert for winning big during last night’s 2009 Grammy Awards!

The winners, who are all consistent hit makers and renowned performers, were presented scores of Grammy’s including Best New Artist, Best Country Collaboration with Vocals, Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album and Best Comedian Album, respectively.  The real winners, of course are the men and women of the U.S. military who saw these great performers live in large and remote locations around the world.  Those memories last a lifetime.

A special congratulations also goes out to the other talented artists below, who were nominated for a Grammy and who have generously volunteered their time and talents to tour with the USO over the years.  You’re ALL winners in the eyes of the USO, and to the hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops serving in the U.S. Armed Forces who you’ve entertained.

Congratulations for a job well done!

It’s Your USO Stories: “Huggin’ and Kissin’ Grandmas”

“When my husband was returning to Afghanistan on Oct. 31st, 2007, he went to check out the DFW USO and met two of the greatest ladies I now have the pleasure to know, Linda Tinneman and Constance Carmen, aka huggin and kissin grandmas.

On that Halloween they dressed up in costumes and took pictures of my husband which they sent to his email and I got to see.  I then contacted these ladies when I found out I would have a connecting flight through DFW in Dec. and they met my flight with their matching t-shirts and pom poms and I got to hug and kiss them as well as hand out the infantry pins I had brought for them.

We have stayed in touch through Facebook and emails and when my husband came back through DFW for R&R two weeks ago, I emailed them and Linda was able to meet his flight and Constance came over and they bought him lunch.  The are planning to meet again when he goes back over in a couple of days.  These ladies are awesome and give me positive support and encouragement about the things I attempt to accomplish as an Army wife, as well as just thoroughly loving service members.

I want to be just like them when I grown up.” -Connie M.
