As thousands of Troops prepare to deploy to Afghanistan, the USO is gearing up to support them. A new USO Center will be opening in Kandahar soon, and celebrity entertainment tours will continue to visit the area. The picture above was shot by our USO staff on the ground there, who can’t wait to receive all of the “furniture, equipment, games, USO gear, etc. You know, all the cool stuff that will make USO Kandahar a great place for the troops!” We can’t wait, either.

When you’re serving thousands of miles from home, how in the world do you stay connected with your young children? It’s tough, and we’ve tried to find ways to shorten the distance. Our private telephone network helps, but it’s not enough.
For the past few years, we’ve been working with a great organization – United Through Reading – to give military members a chance to read to their children, no matter how far they are from each other.
At USO locations around the world – including Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait- there are United Through Reading Military Program spaces set aside. Here, troops can read a book onto a DVD. We then send the DVDs and the books to the children, so they can read along with Mom or Dad.
It’s a simple thing, really. Not all good ideas have to be profound. This program is having a profound effect on military families. The stories we hear are wonderful and uplifting. The UTR program is one way we lift the spirits of troops and their families. And it doesn’t cost the troops a dime.
